BitGo Shifts $7.3 Billion in WBTC to Chainlink CCIP Amid Cross-Chain Migration Wave
BitGo is migrating $7.3 billion in WBTC cross-chain routing from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP, according to TechFlow. KuCoin reports the figure at $7.7 billion. Either reading puts LayerZero out as the sole cross-chain provider for the tokenized Bitcoin asset.

Combined with earlier migrations by Mantle, Kelp, Lombard, Solv Protocol, Virtuals, Re, and Kraken, cumulative outflows from LayerZero stand near $14.6 billion. Trigger event: a $292 million bridge exploit at Kelp DAO in April 2026.
Architecture teardown
LayerZero's WBTC configuration required dual approval — BitGo's own validators plus either LayerZero or Polyhedra — on every cross-chain transfer. Trust was split across two parties but collapsed into a single perimeter when Kelp's bridge was drained. CCIP replaces that model with a minimum of 16 independent node operators per route, distributed across geographies and infrastructure providers. BitGo retains contract ownership and can apply issuer-defined rate limits plus configurable transaction controls that auto-trigger on anomalous throughput before an exploit consolidates. The mechanism operates as a closed feedback loop protocol — measure, threshold, automated cutoff — applied to cross-chain liquidity rather than metabolic state.
BitGo will standardize on Chainlink's Cross-Chain Token (CCT) framework to unify WBTC deployment across chains and default to CCIP for all future asset issuances. The Chainlink directory already lists CCIP-enabled WBTC pools on Ethereum and Ronin. BitGo originally selected LayerZero in 2024 to expand WBTC across Avalanche and BNB Chain; that configuration is now being unwound. CEO Mike Belshe framed the switch as institutional risk management, citing compliance and operational reliability requirements from custody clients expanding into new networks.
Market structure and what to verify
WBTC's market cap sits near $7.4 billion per CoinMarketCap, meaning this migration effectively covers the entire tokenized Bitcoin supply. Chainlink's published metrics place CCIP at approximately 70% of global DeFi integration, securing around $110 billion in cross-chain applications as of August 2026. The asymmetry between a single $292 million exploit and a $14.6 billion outflow wave quantifies the trust cost in cross-chain infrastructure: one bridge failure, measured against years of accumulated integration.
No completion timeline was disclosed. Three variables worth tracking: (1) the cutover dates for WBTC on previously supported chains including Avalanche and BNB Chain, (2) whether prior LayerZero routes migrate intact or fragment across remaining providers, (3) the residual LayerZero institutional footprint and whether a second exit wave follows. The next verifiable milestone is the technical deployment of WBTC on CCIP across the full supported chain set over the coming weeks.
The verdict is binary. LayerZero has lost the institutional WBTC corridor. The Kelp incident's trust cost is now quantified at roughly $14.6 billion in announced outflows, and the pattern of abandonment is structural, not isolated to a single protocol.
